Review: The Raven King (The Raven Cycle #4) by Maggie Stiefvater

The Raven King by Maggie Stiefvater

All her life, Blue has been warned that she will cause her true love's death. She doesn't believe in true love and never thought this would be a problem, but as her life becomes caught up in the strange and sinister world of the Raven Boys, she's not so sure anymore.

Depending on where you began the story, it was about Blue and the little family she found for herself. It was about the women at 300 Fox way and the four Raven boys from Aglionby. It was about a boy searching for a King and a girl wanting to see the world. It was about a dreamer and a magician and a ghost. It was about me falling in love with them all.

“And here was Ronan, like a heart attack that never stopped.”
God knows Ronan is my favorite of the lot! He had such wonderful character development here that I’m just AAAAHHHHHH!! Every single scene with Ronan was absolutely gorgeous. He’s so complex and battles so many thoughts, secrets and dreams; all the while hiding under his bad boy exterior and I just wanna wrap him up in a blanket and keep him safe. All the secrets and twists relating Ronan were just A+. I was definitely not expecting those!

“It wasn't that Henry was less of himself in English. He was less of himself out loud. His native language was thought.”
Also I LOVE Henry. This is probably an unpopular opinion considering many didn’t like to see an important character introduced so late in the series. But I loved him. He also plays such huge roles in Gansey and Blue’s character development and he is legit so sweet?

“Adam Parrish – magician and puzzle, student and logician, man and boy.”
And can someone pick up Adam and give him a hug? He was so amazing in this book! In previous books, Adam would at time infuriate me with things; like how he assumes every time Gansey offers help it’s charity and things like that? But he is the most #adult of the whole lot in this book. I’m so proud of my baby!

Also, Noah. Like I don’t want to give away any spoilers, but I was disappointed? I wanted so much more from his character arc and that didn’t happen.

The Romance was the best part OMG! I can't say much without being spoiler-y but oh! Be still my beating heart!

Was it what I expected? No. Did I like it? Yes. Was I disappointed? Not exactly.

This story isn’t for everyone. It isn't an racy end to the finish line, it’s not a thriller in the actual sense of the word. The one word to describe the whole series would be “atmospheric”. The plot moves at it’s own pace but with a whole lot of foreshadowing (I want to reread just for that!). Truthfully speaking, I expected more. I know I’ve given this 5 stars but books 2 and 3 were my favorite.

“Richard Gansey III had forgotten how many times he had been told he was destined for greatness.”
Don’t get me wrong. The twists and turns in The Raven King are exceptional and Stiefvater bring together all the subplot quite beautifully BUT I definitely expected more. Also I have like ten dozen questions? At the end of the series, there’s so much about some characters left to our own imagination (Though I believe we’ll find some answers in the Ronan trilogy?), there’s certain plotlines not fully dealt with and basically, SO MANY QUESTIONS! But here’s the thing. Maggie Stiefvater didn’t give us all the information on purpose. And that’s what makes the story feel so real. You don’t always get answers and you don’t see everyone’s PoV. While too many questions at the end of the series would have bothered me normally, nothing about this series is normal is it? While I’d LOVE to know all the answers to my questions, I’m okay with not knowing them if the author chooses not to tell.

I could read Maggie Stiefvater’s writing all day. She quite literally writes with magic. Every single book in this series pulled me and swallowed me whole. It’s been awhile since I finished a book in less than 24 hours. I literally couldn’t put the book down and I know I’d have read it in just a couple of hours if I hadn’t had college.

“I don't care to be pretty," Blue shot back hotly, "I care to look on the outside like I look on the inside.”

- The characters
- The plot
- The writing
- The romance

- The rushed feeling towards the end?

Atmospheric, creepy and gorgeous conclusion to The Raven Cycle written with legit magic. While I loved books 2 and 3 more than The Raven King, this is still quite a solid ending to the series and OMG it made my heart so happy!
