Cinder by
Marissa Meyer
A forbidden romance.
A deadly plague.
Earth's fate hinges on one girl . . .
CINDER, a gifted mechanic in New Beijing, is also a cyborg. She's reviled by her stepmother and blamed for her stepsister's sudden illness. But when her life becomes entwined with the handsome Prince Kai's, she finds herself at the centre of a violent struggle between the desires of an evil queen - and a dangerous temptation.
Cinder is caught between duty and freedom, loyalty and betrayal. Now she must uncover secrets about her mysterious past in order to protect Earth's future.
This is not the fairytale you remember. But it's one you won't forget.
“I'm sure I'll feel much more grateful when I find a guy who thinks complex wiring in a girl is a turn-on.”
I definitely prefer Cinder to the classic Cinderella. A cyborg girl with a whole load of sass? Bring it on! I absolutely loved her conversations with Dr. Erland and Iko. I must mention here that Iko is my second favorite character in the book! One of the cutest characters ever ❤
Also I really liked Kai. I know there are many people kind of not liking Kai due to some of his decisions but honestly it's hard being crown prince and the expectations from an entire Kingdom can be heavy to carry. I felt those decisions of his, while not being so good felt more realistic to his character. At the same time I felt he was two-dimensional? (
Neither a flat cardboard cutout nor a completely well developed 3 dimensional character. Somewhere in between?) I'm hoping to see more development of his character in the coming books!
I think talking about anymore of the characters might be a bit spoiler-y but I'll just say that I'd like to see more development of the main and the secondary characters!
“Imagine there was a cure, but finding it would cost you everything. It would completely ruin your life. What would you do?”
So freaking wonderful! It is not easy taking a well loved story and retelling it so uniquely and yet making readers draw parallels between the two. Marissa Meyer has TOTALLY NAILED IT! I absolutely enjoyed how she took the story forward despite some of the twists being predictable. At the end of the book, I enjoyed shouting "I KNEW IT" while grinning like a Cheshire cat.
“Right,' said Kai, 'that'll be no problem in a city of two and a half million people. Let me just go dig out my special Lunar detector, and I'll get right on that.”
Meyer's writing really pulls one in and keeps them there till the last page. The writing was smooth and really easy to read. I enjoyed the dialogue the most. I did hope for a little more description and hopefully will have more of that too in the rest of the series!
- Most characters
- The futuristic take on Cinderella
- The dialogue
- Lack of proper character development in some characters
- lack of description in some places
“This is not the fairytale you remember. But it's one you won't forget. "
Absolutely agreed! It's a really entertaining story and I can feel it gets better with each following book!
