Star Daughter by Shveta Thakrar // Night Markets, Star Courts and Desi goodness

GOODREADS // AMAZON // BOOK DEPOSITORY The daughter of a star and a mortal, Sheetal is used to keeping secrets. Pretending to be "normal." But when an accidental flare of her starfire puts her human father in the hospital, Sheetal needs a full star's help to heal him. A star like her mother, who returned to the sky long ago. Sheetal's quest to save her father will take her to a celestial court of shining wonders and dark shadows, where she must take the stage as her family's champion in a competition to decide the next ruling house of the heavens--and win, or risk never returning to Earth at all. Top Ten Tuesday # 4: Top 10 Movies

Top ten Tuesday is a weekly meme created and hosted by The Broke and the Bookish. Follow the link to know more about the meme and join up!
The Topic for this Tuesday is Top Ten Movies! I've played around with the theme and the topic I've decided is Books that have been adapted into movies- 5 that I liked, 5 that I didn't.

5 movies (adapted from books) I liked!

1. Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone - While I loved almost all the Harry potter movies, this is my favourite of them all! I was among those people who as a kid saw the movie before reading the book. So this movie was my doorway to the wizarding world!

2. Hunger Games- The first movie was my favourite! J-Law gives a smashing performance and the movie gave me so many emotions! - anger, sadness, hope and love!

3. The Devil wears Prada - Okay so I haven't read the book but loved loved loved the movie! This movie had so many epic female actresses who nailed their roles- Meryl Streep as Miranda, Anne Hathaway as Andrea and Emily Blunt as Emily.

4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King - I love the whole trilogy but this movie has my most favourite scene (*spoiler*when Eowyn kills the Witch-King*spoiler*)!

5. The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, The Witch and The Wardrobe - This movie is a favourite from my childhood! I loved the old time fantasy setting and the story!

5 movies (adapted from books) I did not like

1. Percy Jackson & The Lightning Thief- Percy Jackson and the Olympians is one of my favourite book series ever and I was really excited for the movie! Imagine my disappointment when the movie actually released and I hated it. I hated the movie 15 minutes in!

2. Eat Pray Love - Don't get me wrong! I loved Julia roberts' acting in this but the movie pales in comparison to the book. i actually read the book after watching the movie and felt the movie was lacking in a lot of ways. There were scenes that had been altered, and points that had been left out.

3. Maze Runner: The Scorch Trials - What was that? The book was so amazingly written and made me an emotional mess but the movie had me fuming! The movie decided it was okay to make some HUGE changes to the plot and I just didn't like them!

4. The Last Song - This is my favourite Nicholas Sparks novel. A book that made me laugh and cry and pulled at my heartstrings throughout. In comparison the movie was bland and boring. I couldn't see Miley as Ronnie and the movie just fumbled along awkwardly.

5. Vampire Academy - This is my favourite ever YA Fantasy series with vampires and I was psyched for the movie! I was disappointed with the casting but still had hopes for the movie that were dashed into millions of pieces when it finally released.

So what's on your Top Ten Tuesday? Comment and leave a link below so I can return the favour!

  2. Great list! I agree with all the movie adaptations you liked, they are really great and proof that movie adaptations can be done right!
I actually still liked The Scorch Trials and Vampire Academy but I have to say that's because I haven't read the books (yet). And I so believe you when you say the book is better because most books just are. So all the more reason for me to read these books :)

I haven't seen any of your dislikes but have been tempted to see the Percy Jackson movie since I just finally got around to reading the book. I've heard it's awful so I may skip it though!

  5. All the Harry Potter movies and the LOTR trilogy really captured the story as to how I pictured it while reading. Fantastic list and a very creative spin on the topic too.

    1. Agreed! LOTR stayed true to the book all through the way! And HP is well HP :D
      Thank you :)

    1. Absolutely! Everything I loved about the book and the characters was missing!

I really used to like Eat Pray Love too until I read the book and found the book to be more amazing :D

  7. Ooooh, I like that you decided to do the movies you enjoyed and the ones you didn't. I agree with all the ones you enjoyed, those are the adaptations I was really happy with too. I agree with your other picks too when it comes to the ones where I read the books, like Percy Jackson and Eat Pray Love. I enjoyed The Scorch Trials, but I didn't read the book as I didn't enjoy the first book. I picked to do my favourite movies for this movie freebie week, you can check out my post here if you like.

    1. Thank you :) I'm glad you think so too! I hear from a lot of people how they love Eat Pray Love. I tell them all to pick up the book once! The writing is so darn beautiful :) Oh, the scorch Trials movie deviated so much from the story! Going over to check out your post!

  8. Ugh the Percy Jackson movies made me so mad! It's one of my favourite series and they butchered it.

  9. FAVORITES: 'Prada,' 'Narnia' and The Hunger Games which I liked WAY better than the book.

I have "Percy Jackson," but haven't read the book, so maybe that's a good thing. :)

    1. That's awesome :) I liked the visual richness in those movies! Oh you should definitely read the book! The movie completely changed the story into something that made no sense!

  10. Yes to LOTR, Harry Potter and The Hunger Games, though I've only actually watched the first one so far. I have the other three and will get to them when time allows. I hate when film directors change the film too much...you can end up with a right mess.

    1. Those three where perfect movies that mostly stayed true to the book! I was disappointed by the death of Voldemort in the movie though! Exactly! I wish they'd just stick to the book!

  11. Ahhh- I think I need to start doing TTT. I love these lists!

Of all the HP adaptations to movies I have to admit that the first one irked me the most - maybe it was getting to know the actors, the general 'OMG I hope they don't ruin one of my favourite book series EVER' concerns or just the fact that it was the youngest of all the books... But it did irk me. Thinks came too easily to Harry in the movie. Plus no Peeves (although this was true of the entire series it was first apparent in THIS movie). I do enjoy the movies though and I did have a certain fascination with seeing the Hogwarts Express brought to life etc. etc.

I've never read The Devil Wears Prada but I loved the movie...

Percy Jackson - I totally agree. That movie was such a flop. I liked the actors though - even though Annabeth had the WRONG COLOUR HAIR!

I read the first Maze Runner and was underwhelmed but would like to try the movie. I haven't read Scorch Trials yet because - as I mentioned - underwhelmed didn't lead me to NEEDING to know. :(

The Last Song - I enjoyed the movie but then I haven't read the book... And VA? I totally agree. I was sad - one of my favourite series again....

    Great list!

    1. Oh you definitely should! It would be so much fun to see your lists :)

I understand how you feel but I was among those who saw the movie first so it wasn't hard for me! But I did miss Peeves and certain scenes from the book. i believe the ending of Dethly Hallows part 2 (Voldemort's death) was not done properly in the movie!

I love that movie!! And I hear the book (The Devil wears Prada) isn't as good as the movie!

That was like my biggest complaint! I mean they changed Princessy curly blonde hair into straight brown hair!!WHAAAA?

I have a feeling you'll really like the Maze Runner movie! A lot of non fans of the book did :)

Am afraid I didn't enjoy the movie! The Last Song is one of my favourite books and the movie just didn't live up to it..just my opinion though!

      Thank you :)

  12. Totally agree about the Hunger Games adaptation. J Law totally dominates the movie with her awesomeness- probably one of my favorite book to movie adaptations.

  13. I haven't seen The Scorch Trials yet but I loooooved The Maze Runner SO THIS MAKES ME VERY WORRIED AND SAD. *wails* I hate it when they just decide not to follow the book at all. It's so not fair.😩
But yes to Narnia! Omg those were the movies of my childhood. I think I used to be able to quote the whole thing!
